The Jack London Society: Information and Officers
The Jack London Society, Inc., an international non-profit organization that promotes study of the life and work of Jack London, was founded in 1990 as an author society affiliated with the American Literature Association. It numbers over 200 members and continues to grow each year. Membership is open to anyone interested in London.
The Society publishes a biannual magazine, The Call, which features short articles, announcements, news about member activities, book collecting information, photographs, notices of recent publications, reviews, and research notes. It is indexed by the Library of Congress and mailed out in late winter and late summer each year. Kenneth Brandt, Savannah College of Art and Design, serves as editor of The Call. Beginning in 1992, the Society has held biennial Symposia: in Sonoma, California (1992); the Huntington Library in San Marino, California (1994, 1998, 2008); Santa Rosa, California (1996, 2000, 2004, 2010), Lihue, Hawaii (2002), and Alaska (2006). The Symposia offer formal papers, workshops, films, and plenary speakers, as well as informal excursions and social events. Speakers include leading London scholars from major universities as well as presentations designed for high school instructors and interested readers. The Symposia are known for their combination of outstanding scholarly presentations and relaxed pace.
Upcoming Meetings The Society offers one or two panels each year at the American Literature Association meetings, which are held on the East and West Coasts in alternate years, and its biennial Symposia.

I purchased a poster of Jack London Day 10/13/85. It is signed by Asian Scholar Eiji Tsujii … Following that visit, he returned to his homeland and organized the Jack London Society in Kyoto, Japan. Would anyone be interested in seeing it? I can’t find how to attach. It is also available for purchase.

At the end of our street… Vizcaino Avenue in my town of Carmel, CA is a board and batten cottage painted red with white trim. Several of our neighbors say that Jack London lived there for a period of time, but none is sure, and the occupants are renters. The oldest person in the neighborhood is 92 and sharp, and I plan to ask him. Professor Jurick at SJ State Univ who is an expert on poet Robinson Jeffers suggest I ask your society for any information.

Hello, I am reading Stories of Hawaii, and the introduction states that London was working on a novelette about race relations in Hawaii at the time of his death. I googled this, and Russ Kingman claimed that London was in fact working on a novel called Cherry. Which is correct? I was hoping to track down a manuscript of the Hawaii race-relations novelette, if it exists. Thanks!
The novel fragment “Cherry” is about race relations in Hawai’i, so that is the likely reference. “Cherry” was published in the Jack London Journal in 1999. See also the reference to Charmian London’s completion of the fragment: http://www.jacklondons.net/Fiction_of_jack_london/page31.html

Greetings! I know I am taking a risk of sending an email to an inappropriate address, but I have a question about a Jack London story. The story is about an “Eskimo” who had killed a white man and had returned from jail in better physical condition than before he had gone in. Then an impoverished individual is advised to kill a white man to improve his condition in life. Does this sound familiar? I seek the title of this story. Thank you.

I just listened to Tarnel Abbot’s interview with Ben Goldstein from 2019. Good job! I especially liked her speaking to London’s Organic Farming and hope I contributed to this (see The Call Fall/Winter 2014 article of mine on Jack London and Organic Farming)body of knowledge. One correction, however–Jack did not land apply the hog manure but had it drain off behind the pig area. He knew what us feedlot regulators know -that pig manure is terribly odorous and high in nitrogen and lacks the carbon:nitrogen balance of cow manure for example. He was smart to not use it.
