Jack London Queries: Did Jack London ever stay at the Castle by the Sea in Sausalito while he was writing The Sea Wolf?
I have a question. I used to work for the Jack London Historic Ranch and Greg Hayes was my former boss. A wonderful man. I was saddened to hear that he passed away or I would have contacted him. My question is: Did Jack London every stay at the Castle by the Sea in Sausalito while he was writing The Sea Wolf? I am currently a park ranger for the US Army Corps of Engineers at the Bay Model in Sausalito and I am asking on behalf of the Sausalito Historical Society. The building is still here at 221 Bridgeway and I think they would like to commemorate the spot if they knew for sure that JL actually stayed there, even if it was only briefly. Do you have any evidence to support the legend? Please let me know. Thank you. Linda

If Jack London wrote any of The Sea Wolf in Sausalito, there would have been a small possible window. one possibility would have been right after he bought the Spray and sailed it the last week of March in 1903 to April 2. After separating from Bessie in July, he spent a lot of time living on the Spray, but checking Kingman’s Definitive Chronology of Jack London, there is no mention of Sausalito to the end of 1903. On January 26, 1904 The Sea Wolf was copyrighted and serialized in The Century Magazine. London had sailed to Yokohama on January 7, 1904. The book , The Sea Wolf was published shortly after the magazine started publication. So this question will have to wait for more extensive research. I personally have not come across an answer during my research
